The email metrics worth putting in a monthly report.

A reporting deck should help the team decide what to do next. If it only repeats what the platform dashboard already shows, it is not analysis.

Start with the business objective

A newsletter, product announcement, event invitation, service notification, and re-engagement journey should not all be judged the same way.

Before opening the dashboard, write the job of the email in one sentence. Was it meant to create registrations, move people to a product page, generate qualified traffic, activate customers, drive purchases, or simply deliver an important update? That outcome belongs at the top of the report.

Treat opens as directional

Open rate can still help with subject-line and deliverability diagnostics, but it should not carry the story of the campaign. Apple’s privacy protections can privately load remote content, which limits a sender’s ability to know whether a protected user actually opened a message.

That means a high open rate is not automatically a strong campaign. Pair it with clicks, downstream behaviour, conversion, and audience quality.

Read clicks like a UX study

Aggregate CTR tells you whether people clicked. Link-level behaviour tells you what they cared about.

Map clicks back to content position, CTA wording, topic, visual treatment, and destination. If most engagement happens in the first two modules, that is a content hierarchy insight. If a secondary link outperforms the primary CTA, the customer may be telling you the message or offer is not aligned with their intent.

Separate campaign performance from program health

Campaign metrics answer “how did this send perform?” Program metrics answer “is the channel getting healthier?”

Program health includes deliverability, unsubscribe trends, list growth, engaged audience size, production time, error rate, and how often campaigns achieve their intended downstream action. These are the metrics that reveal whether your email operation is improving over time.

Compare like with like

Company-wide averages are often misleading. Event invitations naturally behave differently from fund updates, promotional campaigns, or triggered lifecycle messages.

Create a benchmark by message type, audience, and purpose. Then compare a campaign with its true peers and with its own historical performance.

End every report with decisions

Our preferred final slide is not another chart. It is three boxes: Keep, Test, Stop.

Keep what repeatedly works. Test one or two meaningful hypotheses. Stop practices that add production effort without creating customer value. Reporting should reduce future uncertainty, not just document the past.

Rebrief takeaway

The best email report ends with a decision. If nobody knows what to change after reading it, the report is not finished.
